GRANT TAYLOR'S
SKATEBOARDING
ESSENTIALS
Ambassador Grant Taylor packs for a day of skating.
As a professional skateboarder, ambassador Grant Taylor spends most of his time on his board. Here’s what he needs to get him through a full day of skating.

A GAME PLAN (KIND OF...)
Unless I have a specific spot or two in mind, most days start by linking up with my crew at one of our usual skate parks around LA. We’ll spend some time warming up, working on our gear, and getting our legs under us. If people are feeling motivated, we’ll drive to a certain spot to try a trick, but most of the time we start flying around skating and end up staying where we started.
But there’s usually a rough plan, or at least an idea, of where you want to skate that day.

THE RIGHT BAG
I’ve been liking using the Ranchero™ Backpack. It’s just sort of a different beast than other ones I’ve used before. It’s got these different strap features so you can strap things on the outside, and the 3-way zippers make it easy to tear into. And for me, that’s huge because easy access to my gear means I can spend more time on my board or trying a trick. Plus, it stands up on its own, so I usually just throw it in the corner and let it hang out there without worrying about it tipping and losing all my stuff.
A GEAR KIT
The Ranchero™ Backpack also holds a lot, so there’s plenty of room for day missions. I usually chuck a jacket, some snacks, or whatever else I might need for a skate session.

To build my gear kit, I usually use the (1) Ranchero™ 27L Backpack and throw in (2) a Yonder® 750 mL Water Bottle in Charcoal, (3) some SprayMax, Glamour Gloss, and a tub of (4) 3M, Bondo. I like the (5) Crossroads® Packing Cubes to hold smaller tools and (6) some Duck Tape® Brand Duct Tape - Silver. It’s also important to have some extra wheels, so I always keep spare (7) Grant Taylor Skate Wheels, a (8) pair of pliers, and (9) my Independent, Skate Multitool (Black) for quick fixes. And finally, (10) some type of grip tape and (11) a yellow safety vest always come in handy.
A SPEAKER
Tunes are pretty much essential to a good skate session, so I’ve always got a speaker or jambox with me. Nothing adds hype like music and it’s a great way to elevate the sesh a bit. My homies are usually great at yelling at me and keeping me motivated, but I’ve definitely noticed how much my skating feeds off the energy of the music.
It’s also fun to read people’s moods and learn what sort of music gets them amped. Especially if they’ve been battling with a certain trick, all you have to do is put on that one song they like and watch the hype build up.
A GOOD PLAYLIST
The day usually always starts with some good reggae to kick things off low and slow. If we’re trying to add some hype, I’ll put on SZA or something like that. Mostly, I just have a bunch of random playlists with who knows what on them. There’s everything from Gregory Isaacs to Metallica to some weird 80s stuff. My playlists are all over the place, but I like it that way — keeps people on their toes.
